How we can save the Little Brown Bat: -donate money to the cause of White-Nose Syndrome research. WNS is a major killer of little brown bats. By donating money to animal pathologists, you can help ensure that researchers find a cure for the ravaging disease. You can click on the subtab under this page to find out more ways of stopping the spread of WNS. -decrease pesticide usage. Pesticides originally intended to kill insects also end up poisoning little brown bats.
-build a bat box! A major reason for the decline of little brown bats population is habitat destruction, specifically of trees that they would otherwise reside in after coming out of hibernation in the spring or would raise pups in. Bat boxes give little brown bats a home.
-support wind turbines being activated at higher speeds. Though seemingly innocent, wind turbines cause the death of 700,000 bat per year in the United States! If they were activated at higher speeds, bats would not be able to fly, and hence would not crash into the turbines and die. -if you see bats somewhere that you do not want them, such as your house, please do not try to get rid of bats yourself. Call your local Natural Resource Agency to come help to remove the bats without harming them.
