In the face of the recent Zika outbreak in Latin America, numerous questions have been raised. While these questions are valid, another point that people should be expecting is that climate change exacerbates disease. As temperatures rise, mosquitoes will be able to move further and further north. Incubation times for eggs are shortening as the weather turns hotter. Additionally, according to TIME, the time required to develop diseases decreases as the temperatures increase up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Increased precipitation levels create more puddles for mosquitoes to breed in. While this may mean very little for the US, which is more than adequately prepared for these things, poorer countries and communities will be suffering the effects. This is one thing that should be warily watched.
