At the start of March, the WHO released a report that found that 1.7 million children under age 5 die from pollution annually. They say this figure constitutes 1/4 of all deaths for the age group. Furthermore, pollution is a source of respiratory, gastrointestinal, and other noncommunicable diseases such as cancer (from electronic poisoning) that persist well into adulthood. The report also found that air pollution was the most dangerous pollution, with a worldwide 8% increase of pollutants in the air from 2008-2013). While the report's authors do note that for developed countries the numbers have actually gone down, we citizens in the US should be more wary of air pollution with the attempts to repeal the Clean Power Plan and other Obama-era policies designed to limit coal pollution in the air and water and the appointment of Scott Pruit as EPA head. Since many of the pollution is actually preventable, we must work to raise awareness and pass legislation to protect the health of everyone, especially the most vulnerable.
